How to Get Started

Homeschooling in Nevada is legal, flexible, and parent-directed. The Southern Nevada Homeschool Association (SNHA) is here to help you understand the process and feel confident as you begin your homeschooling journey.

Get started with a few simple steps!

Step 1

Understand Nevada Homeschool Law

Nevada recognizes homeschooling as a form of private education. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for directing their child’s education.

Key points to know:

  • Homeschooling is legal in Nevada

  • Parents choose the curriculum and teaching methods

  • There is no required testing, reporting, or home visits

  • Parents maintain educational records

Step 2

File a Notice of Intent (NOI)

To legally homeschool in Nevada, you must file a Notice of Intent to Homeschool with your local school district one time when you begin homeschooling.

The Notice of Intent must include:

  • Child’s full legal name

  • Child’s date of birth

  • Parent/guardian name and signature

  • A simple educational plan (list of subjects you plan to teach)

Once submitted and acknowledged by the district, you do not need to refile annually unless your child enrolls in public school and later returns to homeschooling or the child moves within the state. If the child moves to a new state, you must submit all paperwork required for the new state. Expect to receive a confirmation letter and save for your records.

Step 3

Choose Your Curriculum

Nevada does not approve or mandate curriculum choices. Families are free to select what best fits their child’s needs.

Common approaches include:

  • Traditional textbook-based learning

  • Online or virtual programs

  • Unit studies

  • Unschooling or interest-led learning

  • Hybrid or cooperative classes

SNHA offers workshops, classes, and resources to help families explore different educational philosophies and tools.

Step 4

Find Community & Support

Homeschooling does not have to be done alone. Community is one of the most important tools for long-term success.

SNHA provides:

  • Educational workshops for kids and parents

  • Field trips and hands-on learning experiences

  • Parent support and workshops

  • Social events and community gatherings
