Why Summer is the Best Time to Start Homeschooling

If homeschooling has been on your heart lately, summer might be the perfect time to ease in and see what it could look like for your family. There’s something about this season, the longer days, more relaxed routines, and a little more breathing room, that makes it easier to slow down and rethink what learning really needs to look and feel like!

You don’t have to dive headfirst with a full curriculum or a calendar full of social activities. In fact, one of the best ways to begin is by not jumping into traditional school at all. Just enjoy time together. Take walks. Start a fun read aloud. Ask questions. Bake something messy. Let your kids be bored. This gentle reset, is called deschooling and it helps them reconnect with curiosity and creativity and gives you time to observe what lights them up! It’s a way to rebuild trust, rest, and rhythm without the pressure of doing everything perfectly right away.

And if you live here in Las Vegas, you’re surrounded by amazing ways to learn through real experiences. Spend the day at Springs Preserve, explore the Nevada State Museum, visit the Natural History Museum, or let your little ones play and create at the Discovery Children’s Museum. Our local libraries have free summer programs, storytimes, and STEM activities. Want some fresh air? Head out to Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Floyd Lamb Park, or Spring Mountain Ranch for nature walks, nature journaling, and history you can actually see and touch.

And here’s the best part. You don’t have to figure this all out on your own. Southern Nevada Homeschool Association is here to walk with you. We host park days, meetups, and some of the best field trips in town! From behind-the-scenes tours to hands-on science experiences, our field trips are more than just fun- they’re real learning, real connection, and real memories.

Whether you’re exploring a state park, visiting a fire station, or walking through a working farm, your kids are learning through experience. And you are custom building your little homeschooling community of like-minded families who get it! Whether you're ready to jump in or just dipping your toes in the water, you’re welcome here at SNHA!

Homeschooling doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be intentional. And summer is a beautiful place to begin!
